Allow me to...“Rav Yaakov - when is moshiach coming”
Allow me to expand on Rav Yaakov’s citation from the Gamara.
Sanhedrin 97a
“Our Rabbis taught: “For the Lord will vindicate His people כי ידין ד' עמו And take revenge for His servants [Cf. Isa. 1.24. Others, and repent Himself concerning] ועל עבדיו יתנחם, When He sees that their might is gone כי אזלת יד, And neither bond nor free is left ואפת עצור ועזוב. (Deuteronomy 32:36). For the Lord shall judge his people, and repent himself of his servants, when he seeth that their power is gone, and there is none shut up, or left: the son of David will not come until denunciators are in abundance [When He sees that their might is gone כי אזלת יד is interpreted as meaning that they will be at the mercy of informers; then For the Lord will vindicate His people כי ידין ד' עמו redeem them through the Messiah.” Another interpretation [When He sees that their might is gone כי אזלת יד]: until scholars are few. Another interpretation: until the [last] perutah has gone from the purse. Yet another interpretation: until the redemption is despaired of, for it is written, And neither bond nor free is left ואפת עצור ועזוב, as were it possible [to say so] Israel had neither Supporter nor Helper. Even as R. Zera, who, whenever he chanced upon scholars engaged thereon [i.e., in calculating the time of the Messiah's coming], would say to them: I beg of you, do not postpone it, for it has been taught: Three come unawares [lit., when the mind is diverted]: Messiah, a found article and a scorpion [Hence by thinking of him they were postponing his coming].”
“Assuredly, this is the declaration Of the Sovereign, the Lord of Hosts, The Mighty One of Israel: Ah, I will get satisfaction from My foes הוי אנחם מצרי I will wreak vengeance on My enemies! ואנקמה מאויבי” (Isaiah 1:24).
This is the same R. Zera who didn’t like the legend of the 3 oaths:
Kethoboth 110b:
“Mishnah. [a man] may compel all [his household] to go up [with him] to the Land of Israel., but none may be compelled to leave it. all [one's household] may be compelled to go up...R. Zera was evading Rab Judah because he [R. Zera] desired to go up to the Land of Israel while Rab Judah had expressed [the following view:]. Whoever goes up from Babylon to the Land of Israel transgresses a positive commandment...”
This is right before the 3 oaths.
R. Zera made aliya and Rab Judah stayed in Exile in Babylonia waiting for the Messiah. In the Talmud R. Zera is a tremendous Zionist. R. Zera is famous for many halachic customs/rulings such as counting of 7 clean days for even one drop of menstrual blood...Gerald Aranoffhttp://scholar.google.com/citations?hl=en&user=7Y27bY0AAAAJ&sortby=pubdate&view_op=list_works&pagesize=100noreply@blogger.com
