From what I've read, Trump expected a quick and easy war like last year. The idea was that the surviving regime leaders would quickly decamp to Russia leaving a civilian government in charge and America could go home. He never expected that the remaining leaders would run with "We will keep fighting because if we can't have Iran, no one can." On the other hand, it has quietly worked out well for Israel. This is the ideal situation for them. There is no deadline. They can choose targets to destroy without worrying that there will be a ceasefire call to stop them, all while receiving American support against Iran's missiles.
It's unlikely that the regime will be disbanded during this war - which will last another few weeks. There needs to be a ground operation to mop up the regime, and crush the irgc and their murderous basij and other terrorist groups.
