G-d controls everything is Not a Jewish Belief

Rambam (|Shemoneh Perakin 8) The Mutakalllimun are, however, of a different opinion in this regard, for I have heard them say that the Divine Will is constantly at work, decreeing everything from time to time. We do not agree with them, but believe that the Divine Will ordained everything at creation, and that all things, at all times, are regulated by the laws of nature, and run their natural course, in accordance with what Solomon said, "As it was, so it will ever be, as it was made so it continues, and there is nothing new under the sun".

    1. Ramban says otherwiseMarch 25, 2026 at 4:42 PM

Except when He wants them to be

Obviously the Rambam is huge, and clearly there are many many other opinions against him

His seforim were burned by some people

DT tends to publish daas yochid many times. Maybe likes the controversy

    2. Ramban defended the rambam against the book burning mob.
He never dared to call Maimonides an "apikores"

    3. In her introduction to her essays on Vayikra, Nechama Leibowitz, zt"l, listed all the authorities who support Rambam and it's not a short list and they're not nobodies.
His seforim being burned points more at the character of his opponents than the contents of his books.
Frankly if I make it to techias hameisim, I'd pay good money to watch Rambam and Ramban have a debate over their major differences.

    4. I can't remember who said it, but a major Rav pointed to the Talmud burning in France as middoh kneged middoh against the book burners of the Rambam.
