Jewish Star:Both sides of the Hersh case

Jewish Star
A Brooklyn father who sent his son to an abusive boot camp for delinquents in the Caribbean is suing a Far Rockaway couple and 30 others for $411 million, claiming they destroyed his reputation. The lawsuit has the blessing of Rav Aharon Schechter, the Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva Chaim Berlin in Brooklyn, according to a lawyer for the main defendant. Michael Hersh made national headlines in 2008 when he had his then 16-year-old son, Isaac, taken from his home in the middle of the night and shipped to Tranquility Bay, a privately owned correctional institution in Jamaica. Former students were suing the institution then, claiming physical and mental abuse. Months later, Isaac got word of his forced captivity to a friend. Friends and family members launched an effort to pressure the Hersh parents to release him. In March of 2008, after nine months in Tranquility Bay, Isaac was freed after several community members, including Dr. David Pelcovitz, chartered a plane and rescued him.[...]

  1. Can this blogger's version of events be corroborated by another recognized news source?

Seeing that so much of the alledged libel has been carried out on the internet and through blogs... I am not sure that I would trust a blog to give an accurate "side" of a story...

"mekubal said...Can this blogger's version of events be corroborated by another recognized news source?"

FYI: The Jewish Star is not a "blog" it is a Jewish community local newspaper (or whatever they call low scale papers that print local news and and advertisements) that is based in the Five Towns near Far Rockaway, NY, that distributes a lot of free copies all over New York City. It also has a website that publishes the same articles as do many such papers, such as The Jewish Press and The Jewish Week (even though they sell print copies, most of their online versions are free.)

See The Jewish Star's "About Us":

"The Jewish Star reports weekly from Orthodox communities in Nassau County and across New York City, including the Five Towns, West Hempstead, Oceanside, Merrick, Long Beach, Lido Beach, Atlantic Beach, Great Neck, Far Rockaway, Forest Hills, Kew Gardens Hills, Flatbush, Marine Park, the Upper East Side, Upper West Side, Staten Island, Riverdale, and many others.

The Jewish Star is distinguished by its commitment to the highest standards of accuracy, integrity and ethics in its journalistic pursuits. By offering unbiased coverage and thorough treatment of sensitive and critical issues, the paper seeks to act as an impetus to effect positive change.

By reporting breaking news, disseminating pertinent information, publicizing communal events, and advocating for non-profit organizations and a variety of worthy causes, The Jewish Star has become an invaluable resource which has earned readers’ trust. The Jewish Star strives to fairly represent all voices in the Orthodox community and is a forum for discussion and debate of relevant issues that affect local readers as well as those in the greater Jewish world.

The Jewish Star is published and distributed each Thursday at no charge throughout the communities it serves. It has a circulation of 13,000 — distributed through streetside news boxes, at kosher supermarkets, many retail establishments, synagogues and to subscribers by U.S. Mail.

The Jewish Star began publication in 2002 led by founding Publisher and Editor Jody Bodner Dubow. It is owned by Richner Communications Inc., also the parent company of Nassau County’s award-winning Herald Community Newspapers; the Long Island Xpress chain of shopper publications; and the Pulitzer Prize-winning Riverdale Press, in The Bronx.

The publisher and editor of The Jewish Star since 2006 is Mayer Fertig. He has been the managing editor of WCBS Newsradio 880 in New York City and, as a volunteer, is a longtime substitute host and associate producer of Nachum Segal‘s JM in the AM (Jewish Moments in the Morning) radio program, heard on WFMU-FM in New Jersey and New York, and around the world on the web."

Their reporting about the Tropper scandal was on the mark and accurate and there is no reason to doubt any different now.

So 150 talmidim & sympathizers of Avi Weiss get together and arrogantly decide to form their own gerus vaad even though they know the candidates will be rejected just like non-orthodox are.
